In the pretty village of Buckland-in-the-Moor lies St Peter’s Church. Churches in rural villages are usually interesting in themselves but St Peter’s has the added attraction of an unusual clock face.
If you’re looking to tell the time from this clock you may notice that instead of numbers are the words ‘my dear mother’.
This addition to the church happened in 1931 when the then Lord of the manor William Whitley donated it to the church as a memorial to his mother.
The church itself dates back to the 12th century with restoration work carried at different times including work by Fellowes Prynne in the early 1900s.
George Fellowes Prynne was born in 1853 at Wyndham Square in Plymouth. As well as restoration work he also designed of many parish churches mostly in the southeast and southwest of England.
He was most noted for his screen work and his expertise benefitted the beautiful 14th century wooden screen at St Peter’s.
